I. Theory

Adverbs of narration are used when telling a story or explaining the sequence of events within a story. While these adverbs will often be found in written texts, they can also be used, for the most part, in conversation.

Eines Tages würde ich gern nach Island reisen.
One day, I’d like to travel to Iceland.

Unterdessen leitet unsere asiatische Repräsentanz in China ein großes Projekt.
Meanwhile, our Asian Office in China is leading a large project.

II. Common Adverbs of Narration

This lesson will focus on the following commonly found adverbs: eines Tages, unterdessen, plötzlich, and schließlich.

Eines Tages

Eines Tages begegneten die beiden Kinder im Wald einer Hexe.
One day, the two children came across a witch in the woods.

Vielleicht gewinne ich eines Tages die Lotterie.
Maybe I will win the lottery someday.

Unterdessen

Das Auto wird repariert. Unterdessen fahre ich mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit.
The car is getting fixed. In the meantime, I am biking to work.

Ich gehe einkaufen. Mein Freund macht unterdessen ein Nickerchen.
I am going shopping. My boyfriend is taking a nap in the meantime.

Plötzlich

Es begann plötzlich stark zu regnen.
It suddenly began to rain heavily.

Die Nacht war still und plötzlich klingelte das Telefon.
The night was quiet and suddenly, the phone rang.

Schließlich

Ich habe mein altes Handy schließlich ersetzt.
I finally had my old phone replaced.

Die Polizei hatte schließlich einen Hinweis auf die Identität des Mörders.
The police had a clue as to the murderer’s identity in the end.
